More exciting news soon!
2010 has been a banner year for Grounded in Music!
We started the year by expanding into our second club, the South Austin Boys and Girls Club, where we turned two shabby old offices into a state of the art recording and media studio! Our South Austin kids started taking their music lessons in the live room, while our hip-hop songwriting and production courses filled the studio with burgeoning young writers and producers.
Our 2010 Gala took place on January 21st at the Paramount Theatre, with Patty Griffin and friends, Jack Ingram and Scott Miller taking the stage for a great cause. Their opening acts were some extraordinary GIM kids, like Kylee, who wrote her own song for the occasion, and Jasmine, who backed her up on drums!
We ran three sessions (spring, fall and summer) in both the East and South Austin Clubs, with the help of our amazing crew: Michael Longoria, Skunk Manhattan, Dave Madden, Brian Ramos, Suzanna Choffel, Tyrone Gordon and Saulpaul. Each of these amazing sessions ended up with a fun and fabulous concert, where the kids performed in “supergroups” with their cool instructors.
We worked hard to keep things fun and creative. We brought the music outside. We piloted a “making the band” program at the East Club. We saw Mumford & Sons sound check, got a visit from Superlitebike, and saw some young, international artists during SXSW!
We found scholarships for six girls to attend Girls Rock camp, and got so much love from the community, including being chosen as the featured Non-Profit for Scion’s X-Change program, Austin’s Live From the Plaza series, and the National Karaoke League’s charity night, where they battled it out to raise over $2,000 for the cause!
Most importantly, we have seen so many amazing kids develop their talent, find their passion and bloom with self-confidence. We have witnessed some extraordinary young people overcome tough times, and trying circumstances, all the while using their love of music as a way to express, to connect and to triumph.
Our small but mighty board has been working tirelessly to develop an exciting plan for 2011. We have so many inspiring things going on, and we can’t wait to tell you about them. But for now, in this lovely, familiar quiet between Thanksgiving and New Years, we’d just like to say how unbelievably honored we are to be a part of so many young lives, and how grateful we are for all of you who continue to support this great cause.
Please have the happiest of holidays, and stay tuned for all the great news to come!
